Chapter 21
Sarge didnât want to admit it to anyone, least of all himself, but people wearing defence force uniforms made him feel less adequate and a little intimidated. In any setting, he would have outranked them in experience, years and probably in equivalency in rank, but that was little consolation. Now, he had Kaye with him and that made the situation worse. The three experts in their different uniforms actually stood to attention when Sarge and Kay walked into the large interview room which was not one where criminals were questioned, but rather it was a small meeting room adjacent to the largest meeting room in the building. Their guests had been sitting in the cloth covered visitorsâ chairs, chatting with each other, but immediately observed a military pose when the door was opened and Sarge and Kaye walked in. They looked surprised to see Kaye there, as she was not part of the police force and was the coroner who had questioned them and allowed them to have fun blowing up stuff.
Sarge introduced himself and explained that Kaye had been co-opted to help sort through what had become a totally different case than what they had believed. Sarge had worked with defence force people before and knew that once he got over his initial nervousness, he would be fine. However, he had persuaded Kaye to start and continue the line of questioning that she had been following before the inquiry had been closed down. She readily agreed because her interest had been piqued. Sarge had laid out some important questions beforehand to her that needed to be asked. They included: How could a charge have been placed into the tanker and located in the exact position? Was there some extra volatility with the LPG and the explosives combined? How could the charge have been detonated? These questions were initially directed to one of the three experts who served in different defence arms; the one who seemed to give the simplest laypersonâs answers back in the court. The others however were to be encouraged to add extra information as they saw fit. Their ranks were a bit confusing, even though they were ostensibly at the same level. Geraldine âGerryâ Mitchell was a sub-lieutenant in the Navy, Marcus OâDwyer was a lieutenant in the army and Patrick McIndoe was a flying officer in the air force. In the end, Sarge told them to address him as Sarge and Kaye as Kaye, rather than use formal titles because it saved time and he wanted them to speak freely. Initially they stumbled over that, as wasnât in their training. They also had concerns that they had spoken a bit too freely at the court and were likely to get into trouble for doing so. If they said more, that trouble would only get worse. Sarge assured them that anything that they said would be treated in confidence and that word wouldnât get back. He explained that the police were now looking at a
